There are many ways to help improve the lives of Cambodian families, but no one action has a more profound impact than supporting Field wells for families.
|
|
Cambodia has a sort of 'all or nothing' situation with water, because the wet monsoon season brings plenty of water for four months, and then the dry monsoon season means no water at all for the other eight months. This keeps the farmers, and their children, in a 'feast and famine' cycle. Without the ability to provide a consistent supply of water to their land, the farmers can only grow 1-2 crops per year during the rainy season. During the dry season, the father must often leave his family to look for temporary work elsewhere. As a result of the feast and famine' cycle, families become separated, children are often malnourished, and a school education for the children is nearly impossible as they scratch out a subsistence living. Some farmers earn as little as US$20/month.

There is a way to change all of that: installation of a field well.

Because of the fact that in many places the water table is less than 15 metres below the surface, a pipe can be bored down which allows water to be pumped up (by hand or with a simple lawn mower-type gas engine) to the surface to irrigate the crops. One good field well can irrigate 2ha (just under 5 acres) which is enough to two families to cultivate.
A field well allows a family to grow crops on otherwise barren land. With good planning, the families can cultivate a variety of crops which will be ready to harvest at different times of the year, generating a more consistent income of perhaps US$250/month. As a result of the increased food production year-round, the fathers do not need to leave looking for work, so families stay together, children are better-fed and healthier, and perhaps for the first time there is enough money to pay the costs of educating the children in nearby schools.
Best of all, once a field well is bored, it continues to help the farmer irrigate his land year after year. Therefore, with each contribution toward this program, you will be helping "turn Cambodia green" with crops.

Please consider whether you could give the gift of water to these villagers: SGD$375 will provide a field well and SGD$525 will enable us to construct a field pond*. Donate and make a difference today! |

If you have any questions about field wells and ponds, please contact Steven Leonard at [email protected] * In some areas it may not be possible or economic to dig a field well, particularly where the ground is very rocky or where the underground water is insufficient. In that case, assuming the ground conditions are suitable, it may be possible to construct a field pond. To learn more, please click here. |
