The Savings Program is at the heart of all of Tabitha's work. When families first join the program, they save as little as a few cents each week. Tabitha staff make weekly home visits to collect the funds and talk about savings goals. After 10 weeks, families are paid 10% interest on their savings, and they use the funds to purchase a "dream" item.
In the beginning, these families have almost nothing -- perhaps one old set of clothes per person, one tin drinking cup to share, and a meagre thatch shelter. Dream items include the barest essentials, such as a towel, a blanket, a cooking pot, or a three-month supply of rice.
