Nokor Tep Singapore Update on events
We had had a number of events in the last month as people returned to Singapore after the school holidays.
New Comers Coffee morning
We welcomed a number of seasoned and new volunteers to Ardmore Park where we detailed upcoming events. We were delighted to meet quite a large number of new volunteers.
Our second Moonwalk
A moonwalk was held to coincide with the full moon and the Moon festival. The location was a 10km walk around the new Botanical gardens and across the barrage, finishing, for well-deserved drink and food, at Satay by the Bay. If you haven't seen Singapore at night from the Barrage it is well worth the trip. Thank you again to all who attended.
Interschool art Competition
Last night we announced the winners of our inaugural Interschool art Competition "Standing Side by Side with the Cambodian Communities". Four schools competed, AIS, UWC Dover, CIS and OFS. The schools choose their best pieces and these were then judged by an independent panel of judges including Singapore-based, Contemporary Abstract Painter Melanie McCollin-Walker, Director of the Australian Arts Project, Gabrielle Cummins and renowned Australia Street artist Regan Tamanui. We were very appreciative of the judges taking time out of their hectic schedules (they were all in the middle of exhibitions!). There were 19 finalists submitted over two categories, under 12 and 12 to 17 years. The judges debated for quite some time on the ultimate finalists and the winners were:
Under 12
1st - "New Beginnings of Cambodia" by Kotono Tanaka (CIS)
2nd- "Hut Market Village A moment in Cambodian Life" by Georgia Hogg (AIS)
3rd - "Two Different Lives" by Safia Farry (AIS)
Commendation - "Building a Community" Together by Nadine Siddharta (CIS)
12 to 17 Years
1st - "Rising from Tonle Sap" by Sachi Shah (OFS)
2nd- "Life" Milan Vidanovic (OFS)
3rd - "Transition" by Maeva Stead (UWC)
Commendation - "Empty Words" by Malavika Sashadri (OFS)
As we said above all the entries in themselves were finalists - to reach the judging yesterday they were all deemed to be "Best in Class" within their schools entries.
The top three finalists from both categories have been invited to attend the Nokor Tep Gala Dinner on Friday 4th Oct where we will be having an awards ceremony. The Gala Dinner, which is being held to raise funds for the Nokor Tep Womens Hospital, will be attended by and the Cambodian Minister for Women's Affairs, the Cambodian Ambassador to Singapore, The Vice Governor of Phnom Penh and Janne Ritskes the Founder of Tabitha.
These six pieces of art will be auctioned to the Gala Dinner, with all proceeds going towards building the Nokor Tep Women's Hospital. In addition we plan to create a selection of cards and a calendar from the 19 finalists' pieces of art - the pieces of art are stunning and they all deserve to be saved for prosperity! These will then be sold and again all proceeds will go to the building of Nokor Tep hospital.
Thank you again to all the students who entered, it was fantastic to see a group of children who were so keen to create something to help others.
We would also like to thank Originals who hosting a showing of the art over a week plus played host to the winners announcement party last night.
As a reminder due to local legislation governing foreign fund raising we cannot advertise our Gala Dinner event on our web site however if you are interested in knowing more please email us on [email protected]
