
It is 2 o’clock in the morning and I am suffering from jet lag- it is more than jet lag – I am suffering from a heart that is filled with a deep sense of humbleness and awe at all that has happened in the past few weeks. Miriam and I arrived home safely yesterday from our trip to Paris where I received the Veuve Cliquot Award last Saturday night.

Happy Western New Years and Happy Chinese New Year’s – how fortunate can a person get - we get to celebrate two different new years in one month. Then we get to celebrate Khmer New Years in April. For me, New Years is always a symbol of new beginnings, new hopes and new dreams – it’s a wonderful way to celebrate life itself.

Today the weather is beautiful. Crisp, cool air and 23 degrees – we are all wearing sweaters and looking forward to perhaps a day of wearing socks. It puts me in the mood for the holiday season. Several people these past few days have wished me Peace of Earth. It’s a lovely sentiment – but it’s a sentiment that starts me thinking.

It has been awhile since I last wrote to you. We have been busy – first our registration of Nokor Tep Foundation in Cambodia is complete. It is a very important step which gives us the ability to work within the legal framework of Cambodia. It means that the Royal Government of Cambodia approves. What a joy and honor that is.

Today is a hard day – today I cried. I didn’t cry when I was diagnosed with breast cancer – I didn’t cry throughout the treatments – crying doesn’t help. But one of the results from my journey with cancer is the almost unbearable awareness of the pain of the women of Cambodia. This morning my managers are all here and they presented me with a list of stories of women suffering from illness who are living in their communities.

Today is the last day of our program year and what a year it has been. We had so many goals – so much we wanted to do. We had so many dreams we wanted to achieve – dreams that each of you made happen. Let me share some of our highlights.

Building Nokor Tep Women’s hospital is like building a Field of Dreams – if you build it, they will come. For friends standing with us it means that multinationals will come with pharmaceuticals and equipment, doctors, nurses, other medical professionals are volunteering to come from many lands – countries like US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Israel, France, and the Netherlands.
